It basically boils down to one word: Nostalgia. I started collecting TMNT because that is the line of action toys/cartoons I was into as a kid. WHY DID YOU START COLLECTING TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES? Groups on Facebook really helped me get a better understanding of TMNT collecting and I got some great deals. I had to have a turtle to shoot the pizzas and I had to have a bad guy to shoot it at, right? So, I went and started adding figures. Which led into me going down the “rabbit hole” of TMNT collectibles. I went on eBay and ordered the pizza thrower that weekend. Having this piece in my hand made me instantly flash back to my childhood when I was playing with it, shooting pizzas in the living room of where we were living at the time. I went to Vermont Comic Con in 2016 and saw a “pizza thrower” vehicle from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. WHAT SPURRED YOU INTEREST IN TOY COLLECTING? I have been collecting legitimately for under two years, and I am proud of the collection I’ve built in that small amount of time. I started collecting TMNT in July of 2016. Learn how Jeremy started his collection and take a look at some of his favorite pieces! He is a native of New York and has a wife and a newborn daughter. This week, we talked to Jeremy Mathsen, a producer for a local news station in Vermont who is also a collector of vintage Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys. Whether it's a hardcore collector with no room on their display case or a veteran sculptor who makes a living in the industry, we'll talk to anyone who lives and breathes toys! A custom manhole cover base, also by Tom, added some appropriate theming and context and really finished off the display of this very rare, very special movie costume.PREVIEWSworld To圜hest proudly introduces Collector's Corner! Here, we'll highlight anyone and everyone with a love of toys and collectibles. These, along with custom leather belts we created, completed the Leonardo costume for his ultimate display. In this case, Kitty Hebert recreated the elbow pads in a mix of foam and vinyl. On occasion, our crew will make replicas of costume pieces to help complete the display of an original movie costume. While the creature portion of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costume arrived to us with most parts present, the prop elbow/knee pads and belt he wore in the movie were missing. The only exception was the tip of the snout, which had been (badly) repainted prior to arrival at our NY studio, and needed to be gently brought back to a more original color. This means only the repair or patch is painted and the original material is left intact. Wherever repairs were made, Tom in-painted those areas. As with all of our conservation work, our approach to this project emphasized maintaining the integrity of the original foam costume, preserving the original “feel”and not making it look like a replica. Restoration of original foam latex costumes is a painstaking process and the conservation of this suit took several months. Various areas of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costume exhibited damage from on set use, a side effect of a movie prop being used in film where the actors have to do martial arts! Many of the joints needed repair, and the suit had a number of cracks throughout. Tom also handled all restoration of this movie prop costume personally. A normal mannequin just can’t flex and bend into a tight foam suit the way a stunt man can! Tom Spina created a custom body form that was a mix of rigid and bendable parts, with a metal frame and foam padding. An exciting project, given the rarity of Henson created costumes and puppets in private collections!Ī custom mannequin would be required, both because of the suit’s small stature (just over 5 feet tall) and because of its unique nature. He wanted to turn the screen used costume parts into a life sized TMNT statue! That happens to be our specialty and a fter extensive discussion and planning, we set about preserving and restoring this amazing foam latex and polyfoam costume. He hoped to have a full display of the character. On arrival at our studio, Leonardo had seen better days! The highly specialized foam latex Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costume had been in a box for many years, as the client was unsure what the best approach to preserving it would be. Our restoration and display of an original Leonardo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles costume from the classic first film.
